Cyclist, Pedestrian Killed in Southwest Kansas

This is a sorry way to end the year, but nevertheless, sad news from southwestern Kansas:

The Kansas Highway patrol said Ethan Rodenberg, of Ulysses, was killed shortly after 6 p.m. when he was hit by the semi as he rode his bike near the intersection of San Jacinto Avenue and K-25 highway in Ulysses in Grant County. see map

He was dead at the scene. The driver of the 2006 Kenworth semi, Hobart G. Emberton, 62, of Garden City, wasn’t injured.

A little more than half an hour later in Finney County, Don Martinez, 49, of Garden City, died after he was hit by a pickup truck as he walked in the westbound lane of US-50 highway, the patrol said. see map

The westbound truck that hit him was a 1995 GMC driven by Julio C. Cano-Palma, 35, also of Garden City. Cano-Palma wasn’t injured.

All the reports are rather thin on details, and there is no word on whether either driver will face any charges…
