Lawrence Road Rage Driver Arrested

The Lawrence Journal-World reports that a man has been arrested for allegedly assaulting a group of bicyclists near Lawrence in July (Lawrence Police Seek Road Rage Driver):

Scott YoungDouglas County prosecutors have charged a Baldwin City man in connection with a July 15 altercation with a group of bicyclists south of Lawrence.

Scott A. Young, 48, who was arrested Monday, faces charges of aggravated battery and criminal damage to property.

Prosecutors allege Young drove his pickup truck into the lead cyclist of a group of riders in the 1000 block of East 1400 Road. That cyclist was thrown from his bike. Bicyclists said the truck driver didn’t stop. [read more]

Comments on the newspaper article indicate that Young is well-known in Lawrence for being “hostile and aggressive towards everyone”. Scott Young is “funseeker990” on MySpace, where he describes himself as a self-employed home designer.

And take this for what it’s worth (i.e. total speculation), but in June, as the riders in the Biking Across Kansas tour were leaving Baldwin City, a pickup truck stopped in the oncoming traffic lane, and the driver got out and began screaming at passing cyclists. From what I could see, there’s wasn’t anything, other than our mere presence on the road, that set him off, but the guy was totally unhinged. He looked a lot like the booking photo of Scott Young…

Jury selected in case of man accused of hitting bicyclist with his truck: “A jury was selected Monday morning in the trial of a Baldwin City man accused of striking a Lawrence bicyclist with his vehicle.

Scott A. Young, 48, faces an aggravated battery charge and other counts related to a July 15 incident south of Lawrence.

During a November preliminary hearing, two Lawrence bicyclists said an angry driver drove up behind them on East 1400 Road, south of Broken Arrow Park, and yelled obscenities before swerving over and striking the lead rider, Rob Wilshusen, who suffered cuts to his shoulder back and hip, and a hematoma on his left hip.

A sheriff’s officer in November testified Young told him during an interview that he didn’t recall striking any riders but that he heard a noise as he passed the riders.”
