El Dorado Bike Rack Design Competition

The city of El Dorado, Kansas is holding a Bike Rack Design Competition this spring. The new racks are intended to promote bicycle and pedestrian traffic, increase revenue for downtown businesses, and encourage health and fitness:

El Dorado Bike Rack Design CompetitionThe El Dorado Main Street organization, in partnership with the City of El Dorado is sponsoring a bicycle rack design competition for downtown El Dorado. The purpose of this project is to beautify the community, encourage alternate transportation and promote exercise and fitness by providing aesthetically-pleasing parking options for cyclists. The submitted design shall exhibit a balance of form, function and security and at the same time be artistic and contextual to the downtown area.

This is an open competition and drawings must be submitted on or before 04/12/2011. In addition to public recognition, the winner(s) will receive a family gift package for the upcoming Frontier Western Celebration.

Designers interested in entering the competition must register by March 22nd, and entries are due by April 12th.

Designs must accommodate at least two, but no more than four bicycles, and must be safe for pedestrian and bicyclists, and no wider than 6 feet, and no more than 10 feet in length, with bicycles attached. Of course, the ability to lock the bicycle frame securely to the rack is essential, and the design must also ensure that bicycles are not damaged as a result of rack usage.

Designs should either “hold universal appeal or reference a unique feature of El Dorado’s downtown district”, and must be designed to withstand all weather conditions as well as heavy use with little or no maintenance.

Winner(s) will be chosen on June 25th.
