Apply For 2011-2012 Sunflower Foundation Trail Grants

The Sunflower Foundation has announced a new Request for Proposals to build school or community-based walking or multi-use trails, which they call Sunflower Trails:

Sunflower Trails (RFP 11-101) – Funding to improve the health of students, families and communities by offering support to build new or expanded public trails to increase the opportunity for physical activity.

Proposals in response to this RFP may be submitted through January 5, 2012 and will have two opportunities for consideration:

  • For proposals submitted by 5:00 p.m., Tuesday, July 26, 2011 – funding announcements will be made by Friday, August 19, 2011.
  • For proposals submitted by 5:00 p.m., Thursday, January 5, 2012 (the final RFP deadline) – funding announcements will be made by Friday, February 17, 2012.

The Sunflower Foundation’s mission is to serve as a catalyst for improving the health of Kansans. It directs resources toward helping people and communities achieve and maintain optimal health by improving access to health care and information, eliminating barriers, emphasizing prevention and promoting healthy environments that enable and support personal responsibility for health.

The Sunflower Foundation launched its “Sunflower Trails” program in 2005 to help change school and community environments so that people can be more active. They have awarded more than 50 grants to communities and schools across Kansas so far.

According to the foundation’s latest annual report, recent trail grant recipients include Colwich, Hesston, Jewell, Mount Hope, Ottawa, Wichita, Kinsley, Norton, LaCrosse, and Salina, totaling about $180,000.
