KCK Crash Victim Identified

The bicyclist who was struck and killed by a motor vehicle in Kansas City, Kansas on November 6th has been identified as Michael W. Cannon, age 48.

According to KCTV:

Authorities said the driver was heading west on Shawnee Drive when he collided with the bike. The driver immediately stopped and called 911 for help.

A woman, who was walking to a nearby gas station, said she saw the horrific crash.

“I heard some breaks turned around and car slammed into bike. Just hit each other. There was no way he could not hit him it happened so fast,” witness Tabitha Hawks said.

Accident investigators are trying to determine if the driver was at fault in any way or if this was accident that couldn’t be avoided. At this point, they don’t believe speeding was a factor.

Those who knew Cannon said he was kind and helpful to his neighbors, children and even strangers. He volunteered to read to children and was a neighborhood handyman. In addition to fixing cars, he had earlier this week helped out a family who had a broken washing machine. He washed the family’s clothes so that the children could have clean clothes.

“There’s nobody like Mike. He was so wonderful. I was proud to be his mother,” Diana Warehime said. “That’s Mike. He’d do things for everybody.”

Cannon was even homeless at one time, but he never stopped extending a helping hand to others, according to those who knew him best.
