2013 Cyclocross Masters National Champion Steve Tilford

Congratulations to Topeka’s Steve Tilford, who took first place in the Masters Men 50-54 category at the Cyclocross National Championships in Wisconsin, and is the 2013 Cyclocross National Champion!

Report from CXMagazine.com:

On what perhaps was the most treacherous course conditions of the day, as the sloppy snow and mud began to freeze over in the cooling temperatures, Steve Tilford (TradeWind Energy) once again dominated the race to win in the Masters Men 50-54 category.

Tilford accelerated away from a tight pack on the opening turns, and was out of sight by the finish of the first lap. A hard crash on the second lap, however, injured the multi-time National champion’s shoulder, but did not slow his pursuit of another title.

The title is Tilford’s eighth Cyclocross National Championship. He also won last year’s Masters title at the same venue.

Steve Tilford has been racing bikes since his teens, and is one of the legends of the sport, and holder of a virtually endless list of titles over the years. He was inducted into the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame in 2000.

Unfortunately, it sounds like he may have banged up his shoulder pretty severely in this year’s win:

I have an appointment with an orthopedic surgeon this morning at 9:30. My arm is all swollen and mushy. I’m hoping I just stretched everything around a lot and it isn’t something serious. It doesn’t feel like anything I’ve ever done before and I’ve jacked my shoulders up in about every way you can. It is nearly impossible comparing my shoulders to each other, trying to figure out what they are supposed to look like. But, all this liquid in there isn’t good. I have exactly 3 weeks until Master’s Worlds in Louisville.

Heal up, quick, Steve!
