Wichita Bicyclist Dies After Colliding With Train

On June 23rd, 52-year-old Craig McBroom was struck by a train in Wichita while commuting to work by bike. McBroom later died, on July 1, from his injuries.

According to Kansas.com:

Craig McBroom, 52, was on his way to his job at Spangles when he was struck by a Burlington Northern Santa Fe train shortly before 7:45 a.m. on June 23 at Pawnee and Hydraulic, police have said. He was taken to Via Christi Hospital St. Francis, where he died Tuesday morning.

McBroom worked at the Spangles at Pawnee and K-15 and often rode his bike to work, co-workers said.

KWCH reports:

Police believe the man did not intentionally ride bike out in front of train. The railroad crossing arms and lights were activated at the time of the accident.

“It’s difficult in the morning when you’re going to work or coming home from work, we understand that people are in a hurry, they want to get to their final destination,” said Sgt. Travis Rakestraw with Wichita police. “But to get there safely, they have to obey the traffic laws, they have to obey the signs that are down, the arms, the bells.”

Craig McBroom is the fourth person to die while bicycling in Kansas in 2014. Kristina Brown was killed by a drunk driver on January 10th in Wichita, Kenneth Young collapsed and died from a medical condition near Admire on June 22, and Mark Jilka was struck and killed near Manhattan on June 26.
