Born in the 1870s as a route to Black Hills gold, this 321-mile railroad corridor created and supplied settlements across northern Nebraska. Soon after the trains stopped in 1992, Rails to Trails Conservancy purchased the right-of-way for the nation's longest recreational rail-to-trail project.
The Steamboat Trace Hiking/Biking Trail consists of 21 miles of abandoned railroad corridor paralleling the Missouri River from approximately 6 miles south of Nebraska City to just south of Brownville, Nebraska.
Develops and maintains sustainable off-road recreational trails in Eastern Nebraska and Western Iowa, including Branched Oak SRA, Jewel Park, Lake Manawa State Park, Lewis And Clark Monument, Platte River State Park, Swanson Park, Tranquility Park, and Wilderness Park.
