Lincoln Named 'Biketown'

What happens when you give someone a free bike?

That simple question was the genesis of Bicycling Magazine’s BikeTown program, which has been giving away bicycles since 2003.

This year, Lincoln, Nebraska has been chosen, along with four other communities, to participate in the BikeTown program, and 30 area residents will receive a brand-new bike.

To enter, just submit a short, 50-word essay on the BikeTown web site, that answers the question “How will a new bike set you free?”

Winning entries will be selected by the editors, and all winners will receive a free bike, and will be asked to keep a journal for three months to chronicle their experiences with their bike. Results for all BikeTown participants may be featured in the magazine following the conclusion of the three-month period.

The bicycles participants receive are theirs to keep, and are new Trek Lime Coasting bikes, which are “easy-to-ride, automatic shifting bikes designed for casual, fun-spirited riding.”

In addition to Lincoln, other 2008 BikeTown USA cities are Columbus, Ohio; San Francisco, California; Portland, Oregon; and Seattle, Washington.
