Southwind Rail Trail

The Southwind Rail Trail is located in Allen County, Kansas, running between the communities of Iola and Humboldt, over a distance of about 6 miles. The trail features a crushed limestone surface, and several scenic points, including the magnificent Elm Creek railroad bridge.

The trail connects, in Iola, with the 51-mile Prairie Spirit Rail Trail State Park, making a total distance of about 57 miles (or much more, if you connect with the Flint Hills Nature Trail in Ottawa).

Southwind Rail Trail - Elm Creek Bridge - This is the historic Elm Creek bridge on the Southwind Rail Trail. This bridge originally carried railroad traffic. Railings were added, using wood hand-crafted by a local artisan. Southwind Rail Trail - Road Crossing - This is a typical road crossing on the Southwind Rail Trail, with bollards to keep out motor vehicle traffic. Road traffic has right-of-way. Southwind Rail Trail - Trail Rules - This sign provides the rules of the trail for bicyclists and pedestrians on the Southwind Rail Trail. Hours are dawn to dusk.
